How to use terminology database in UA projects
If you're using Trados Studio 2019 or newer, the easiest way to access TD is via Kalcium plugin. In case you have older version of Trados Studio, please consider upgrading to the newer version.
Benefits of using Kalcium plugin:
Connect Kalcium terminology database live to Trados projects
No attached export terminology files needed during the project preparation
Thanks to the live connection, linguists always can use up-to-date terms
Term search is much quicker and easier
Note that there are 3 features within this plugin:
Term recognition (same as you are used to in Trados) – automatically connected to Kalcium live TB
Segment Analyzer provides more in-depth analysis of terminology within segments that is easier to navigate
Kalcium Search offers search in live TD directly from Studio editor
Kalcium Plugin Installation
Download the Kaleidoscope.Kalcium.Plugin installer (🗃️/Tableau/FromJTE/_References_/10_Terminology).
If you already have an older version of Kalcium plugin installed, please uninstall it (on Windows, this would be via Add or Remove programs feature)
Unzip the downloaded plugin and double click it to install
Now, open your Trados Studio.
Go to tab Add-Ins and click on Settings
You will see this screen →
7. Fill in the info:
o Server URL: 🔗https://tableau.kaleidoscope.online/
o Credentials are saved here: 🗃️/Tableau/FromJTE/_References_/10_Terminology/JON_Users_Tableau_Kalcium Credentials_external.xlsx
o Tick Remember me if you do not want to be entering this info repeatedly in the future
8. Press Authenticate and you should now be logged in successfully
Kalcium plugin setup
For the Kalcium plugin to work as expected, we need to set it up correctly. Please watch the short video to make sure your settings are correct.
It's important to use the filter Tableau terms as shown in the video, so the Slack terms won't be displayed (they do not have to be followed).
How to use live TD in Term recognition window
You can also use the live Tableau TD in Term recognition window when Kalcium Plug-in is installed.
This is the most traditional way of displaying the terms and linguists are most used to it. It is also very customizable, so linguists can select what information gets displayed.
For info on how to set this up, please watch this short video.
Occasionally, the Term Recognition will not connect to the TD.
Troubleshooting tips:
Make sure you're logged into Kalcium plugin (Add-Ins → Login, in case the credentials are not saved, Add-Ins → Settings → Authenticate)
Restart the Trados Studio
Check if Kalcium Terminology Provider is selected correctly: Project Settings → Termbases → Use → Kalcium Terminology Provider
Check if there's a green tick in the right side of Termbase field in Project Settings → Termbases
In the Term Recognition window, make sure to select appropriate fields to be displayed. This is done via Hitlist Settings → Select fields.
This list has three parts:
Entry data, Source term data and Target term data.
Feel free to tick the fields you'd like to see but Status is a mandatory field to be displayed in both Source and Target term - you don't want to be using deprecated terms!
Segment Analyzer
Kalcium Plug-in feature that displays a more detailed analysis of a segment and shows the terms in a separate window that is easier to navigate.
To enable Segment Analyzer, go to Add-Ins → Segment Analyzer.
It will open as a separate window at the bottom of the screen.
Kalcium Search
Kalcium Plug-in feature that allows you to search in live TD.
To enable Kalcium Search, go to Add-Ins → Search.
If you already have a Segment Analyzer feature enabled, Search will open in a separate tab within the Analyzer window. Otherwise, it will open in a new window.
Set up of Segment Analyzer and Kalcium Search
Just like Kalcium web client, you can adjust the search settings in Kalcium Plug-in as needed, too. You can set up the search (source) and displayed (target) languages, search mode and the similarity (fuzzy) rate value.
For Segment Analyzer, it is recommended to Use document source language and target languages, as seen in the video.
How to use Segment Analyzer
It lists all the terms that appear in the source text, and you can click between them to see more details in an easier format than in Term Recognition window which may be a bit cramped.
This feature provides clearer overview of terms and its metadata. The URLs in the term entries are also clickable from Segment Analyzer, so you can find additional information quicker.
How to use Search
Using the Search feature allows you to find any term in the terminology database, not only those that appear in the source text.
The search results depend on the settings that were explained above.
